Do external power supplies need to be certified?

Per 10 CFR 430.32 (w) (4), external power supplies must bear an obvious and permanent marking that complies with the International Efficiency Marking Protocol for External Power Supplies. 10 CFR Part 429 sets certification requirements for products covered by 10 CFR Part 430, which includes external power supplies.

Do you need a power adapter?

An adapter will allow you only to plug your appliance into another type of outlet. Most are small and lightweight, making them easy to pack. If you’re packing lots of devices (like a camera, smartphone, and tablet), you should invest in multiple adapters so that you can charge all of your electronics at once.

Remember that you will always need to use an adapter with a converter, but you won’t always need to use a converter with an adapter. Since travel power converters take up so much space on their own, you’ll want to buy one that comes with a built-in plug adapter.

Where do I find my power supply information?

Locate the manufacturer’s power supply information for the device. This may be: A) A label affixed directly to the back of the device; B) On the AC transformer box along the power lead; or C) Molded into the plastic on the plug. It is often in very small print.
