How is the Nordic power system changing?

In the report we present our perspective on the overall trajectory of the Nordic power system, which is undergoing significant changes with the expansion of renewables, electrification and new industrial demand. This year’s report reaffirms the Nordic TSOs commitment to do what we can to enable a successful transition.

The Nordic power system is a mixture of generation sources, where hydro, nuclear and wind power are the main sources. The Nordic region has many energy intensive industries and a large share of electricity heated houses. Therefore the electricity consumption and the electricity’s share of total power use is higher than in the rest of the EU.

How does the Nordic grid contribute to a stronger and more flexible European power system?

As a result, it contributes to a stronger and more flexible European power system. The Nordic grid is managed by transmission system operators (TSOs) in each country: Svenska Kraftnät in Sweden, Statnett in Norway, Energinet in Denmark, and Fingrid in Finland.

How does the Nordic grid work?

By managing renewable energy fluctuations efficiently, the Nordic grid ensures that surplus energy goes where it’s needed. The Nordic power grid also connects to the broader European grid through direct current (DC) links with Germany, Lithuania, and Poland. All the participating countries benefit from an integrated Nordic power system, which increases security of supply and ensures a more efficient system. In this way, we can make the most of our different competitive advantages and reduce the overall costs. We expect significant growth in electricity consumption – how much depends on production.
